Protecting the House

Throughout the nine weeks of the National Football League’s 100th season, many of the sponsored commercials are using more and more professional football players. Personally, my favorite set of commercials is the Progressive insurance commercials starring Baker Mayfield. The company had paid for numerous commercials involving the Cleveland Browns starting Quarterback. One of the commercials involves Baker attempting to start up a simple, old, and raggedy push mower while a field maintenance team member offers Baker his motor. Another is Baker attempting to provide power to a blender somewhere in the stadium by randomly flipping switches in a power box. There is another where he is thanking everyone for coming to watch him play, then begin cleaning the stadium using a handheld vacuum, and one final one of him and his wife binge-watching a show on the big scoreboard at the stadium. The whole purpose of these commercials revolves about protecting “your” house. Being a part of the NFL, National Football League, means that these stadiums are their homes, The commercials are humorous to its audience, provides a pull to football fans by using Baker Mayfield, and presents Baker to be like any other ordinary homeowner. Progressive cleverly captivated this image of protecting your house without using the iconic Flo character. In the future, Progressive may be seen to shy away from using Flo and using more relatable characters accomplishing daily feats.

  1. I love commercials involving professional athletes. It allows you to get a feel for who they are as people outside of their sport. Well, at least who they appear to be. Nonetheless, I love those kind of commercials and I hope they continue to create them.
