Spotify: Social Media or just Music?
Looking at a very unique social media platform, Spotify, we can see unique traits that make this a platform in the digital world, while flipping the entire music industry onto its head. This platform does not let users necessarily post on a wall, but allows you to connect into Instagram and Facebook accounts to share what music the individual is currently listening to. What Spotify does allow the user to do is follow friends for easier sharing of playlists, new artist, or songs in general. The platform allows users to follow their favorite artists or groups and receive notifications when they release something new. While this is not like most social media platforms, I find that it still meets the basics a platform needs to have. These I have found to be the ability to follow other users, a way to express yourself. Through Spotify, this means creating a playlist that are tailored to the listener and sharing this specific playlist with their friends or following a certain playlist Spotify's algorithm created for the individual. The third thing that makes Spotify a platform is the ability to customize a playlist and customize how these appear on your profile. Spotify was once just a program that flipped the music business completely to slowly continually develop its own platform specifically for sharing music. The success of this integration is found in the attribution to Spotify’s success from it’s early days out of Stockholm to its much more recent Public days on the New York Stock Exchange.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of Spotify and listen to it every day, multiple times a day! I think that this has totally changed the way many people listen to music! The access that this app has to the music industry is amazing! One moment I can be listening to Beyonce and then the next The Piano Guys! I am still not sure if I would completely call it a social media platform but it is headed in the direction of becoming one!
Thanks for sharing,
Alyson Hoffman
This is a great point to bring up as we classify Spotify has a social media app that plays music but I guess it really is just music in my eyes. I know it has a ton of cool features but really I just use it to play music and make playlists. If you are a student, you can get Spotify for just five dollars and it evens comes with HULU now! Just what we need, a bigger distraction from our homework and blogs!
