Spotify Wrapped

Each year Spotify releases a Spotify wrapped for its users. This indicates a summary of what each user has listened to over the past year. For the 2019 Spotify wrapped this included data from 2015 when I first started using Spotify. The stats that the company showed contain how many minutes of music someone listened to over the year, the top five to ten songs a user streamed over the past year. With the decade ending Spotify has compiled and consolidated all data into a top song category for that year and a top artist of the year. The data itself is really cool to look at and presented in a fun manner. Looking into the ethical and legal side of this, Spotify has collected data ever since their users join. When accepting the terms and conditions to the platform this allows the company to collect this data, build playlists around the music you listen to, promote artists around your style and even promote concert tickets for artists sharing their music on this platform. The year wrapped for Spotify has been a huge thing each year I have seen it and always shows listening patterns of each user. This year a lot of my friends shared their stats from the service and posted it to their Instagram stories. With each share of this, more people joined Spotify or decided to share their time with Spotify throughout that year and the decade. I can see these stats being used to exploit sales for companies if ever shared. This could be used for geographic references. Spotify already shows the top five cities an artist is streamed in, thus using this data to market to consumers would not be a far stretch. Marketing is forever changing, and this could be a new marketing approach used across the globe.
